S12 E13: Lent Book Study Part 6: Anointing of the Sick

About This Episode

In this episode, we continue with part six of our Lenten book study Be Transformed by Dr. Bob Schuchts. We discuss how the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick heals the wound of hopelessness and share the different ways we approach these dark and sometimes scary places in life. While, in the moment, it may appear that we are alone, God never leaves us and wants to restore our hope in Him. Whenever you experience hopelessness, we invite you to surrender your sorrows to Him and courageously place your hope in our faithful God.

Hey friends! We are going to continue this series with one more bonus episode next Monday, April 3rd to share further insights and conclude Be Transformed.

Quote to Ponder

The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick specifically confronts sickness, hopelessness, and death. In turn, Jesus’ resurrection power is actualized in three distinct ways: (1) by providing strength and hope in the midst of illness; (2) through restoring our health; and (3) by preparing us for our final glorification, where we will be made completely whole (see CCC, 1532). “By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests, the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them”
— Be Transformed, pgs 137-138
Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who frees you from sin, save you and raise you up.
— (CCC, 1513) - Be Transformed, pg 138
From the instant sin entered the world, all of creation was doomed to a hopeless death. In our own lives, sin mysteriously ushers doom, disease, and despair into our bodies and souls (all symptoms of death) (see Dt 28; Rom 5-7; CCC, 1502). We all have places in our hearts where we have experienced the disappointment of love, discouragement over a loss of purpose, and the deadening of our deepest unmet desires. These spiritual deaths are at the root of so much of the hopelessness we experience on a day-to-day basis.
— Be Transformed, pg 139
Every temptation comes down to this one final temptation, it is the temptation to believe that the satisfaction of the deepest desires of our heart is totally up to us.
— Fr. Albacete
Healing and miracles often increase our hope, but they are not the basis for our hope. We have another more trustworthy, rock-solid foundation for our hope: the person, Jesus Christ, who describes himself as “the resurrection and the life.” He told Martha, anyone who believes in him will never die (see Jn11:25-26). Holding firm to this hope, we are promised a share in his life. All of us who believe in the Resurrection are already “raised to life” This is our hope.
— Be Transformed, pg 150

Scripture for Lectio Divina

Cure the sick, raise the dead.
— Matthew 10:7–8
